Bluenose Blues - Jazzing the Blues
September 6 - 8, 2019
DalKing’s Swing Dance Society is thrilled once again to host the AMAZING Daniel Repsch – international blues dance instructor, competitor, and DJ—for another blues-dance workshop weekend in Halifax with all new material! You won’t want to miss this opportunity to learn more about blues dancing from one of the best dancers and teachers in the world. Whether you are new to blues dancing or trying to bring your dancing up a level, the weekend will be fun, engaging, and challenging!!
This time the workshop focuses on Jazz Blues or “Ballrooming” styles – the kinds of blues dancing that started in places like the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem and moved to the stylings of the great bands and jazz blues artists like Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, and Sidney Bechet.
please note the below schedule has changed due to hurricane dorian

Sunday intensive is back on 8-9:30pm at 1313 Hollis. Social dance to follow 9:30-10:30pm also at 1313.
We’ll have three days of workshops and dancing! The main workshops and dances are on Friday night and Saturday, with local blues band Ced, Marty and Dave playing on Saturday night.
On Sunday we offer an “intensive” option for intermediate and advanced dancers (who have taken many blues classes or participated in national-level blues dance workshops); then we have our regular Second Sunday night Barrington Blues social dance. [Note that Sunday events require extra fees.]

Friday: [1313 Hollis St]
Registration opens 6:45 pm [music will be playing so you can dance]
Workshop 1 – 7:30-9:00 – Jazzy blues foundations
Workshop 2 – 9:15-10:15 – Jazzy blues in embrace
Dance 10:15 pm – 2 am [late night snacks around 11:30]
7:30-9:00 pm - Jazzy Blues Foundations
In this Jazz-focused class, we’ll look at the Blues dance essentials that particularly match this style of music. We’ll start from the beginning and explore the rhythms, vocabulary, and aesthetics that both create a Blues dance and separate a Jazzy dance from a Jukin’ one.
9:15-10:15 pm - Jazzy Blues in Embrace
In this class we’ll refine and add to our embrace position dancing! We’ll start by finding how to invite, connect, and exit this position, and how it applies to a jazzy Blues aesthetic. With that, we’ll introduce some sophisticated vocabulary to give you some ideas to inspire your dancing.
Saturday: [1313 Hollis St] * Adjusted 6:30pm Friday *
Registration 9:00 am [bring your lunch!]
Workshop 3 – 9:15-10:30 – Movin’ around!
Workshop 4 – 10:30-12:00 – Latin rhythms in blues
Intermediate/advanced intensive – TBD- Adding acceleration and deceleration [ NOTE – THIS WAS PREVIOUSLY SCHEDULED FOR SUNDAY AND WILL HAPPEN IF DALPLEX OPENS]
SATURDAY NIGHT – sorry, but this is cancelled. The band can’t make it, and it is likely that roads will be unsafe and power intermittent.
10:00-12 noon - Movin’ Around
This class will really cover some ground! We’ll explore how rotational movement applies to Blues vocabulary in a variety of contexts, including turns and classic jazz steps. From there we’ll add the feeling of dancing in a ballroom, seeing how these and other movements can travel the room or be danced on the spot. Throughout all of this, we’ll introduce techniques for dancing in both closed and promenade positions.
12:30-2:00 pm - Latin Rhythms in Blues
Historically Blues music has incorporated a variety of Latin rhythms, and those rhythms are present in the Blues Dance community today. We’ll start by helping train your ear to recognize several of these rhythms. With that knowledge, we’ll offer vocabulary ideas for both leads and follows to keep you dancing no matter what the music throws at you.
2:15-3:45 pm - Adding Acceleration and Deceleration
Let’s add dynamics to our momentum! This class will explore the concepts of acceleration and deceleration through several base movements. We’ll work on the techniques that make these possible, and then approach this as a lead and as a follow choice, and how both partners can continue to read each other in the moment.
